                        He was the son of Charles and Jane Manley and the brother of Walter, Maud (Turner), Charles, Jane, Emily, Fred and Alfred Manley of 1,5 Upper Regent Street, Beeston, Nottingham.
                                
                                Military history
                            
                            He enlisted 15/9/1914 weighing 148 lbs and standing 5' 7". He was posted 30/4/1917. His Army Service Record survives but much of it is illegible. At some point he was 'hit by a piece of shrapnel' and was noticed 'spitting blood each morning'. However, this wound was not fatal because elsewhere in the record he was 'presumed dead'.
