Arthur Hayes was born on 1st December 1884 at Newark, he was the son of William Henry Hayes a brickmaker and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hayes née Good, of 10 Willoughby Street, Beeston, Nottingham.
His father William Henry Hayes was born in 1857 at Radord, his mother Elizabeth Good was born in 1860 at Riddings, Derbyshire, they were married on 2nd October 1880 at Christ Church at Newark, they went on to have 6 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or earley childhood their surviving children were George, Arthur, Albert and Alice.
In the 1911 census his mother and sibling are living at 10 Willoughby Street, Beeston, his mother Elizabeth Hayes married 50 yrs is a cook domestic she is living with her daughter Alice Hayes 19 yrs is a blouse machinist.
Private Arthur Hayes enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Beeston, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment.
The 17th Bn Sherwood Foresters (The Welbeck Rangers) left Nottingham for Aldershot and became part of the 117th Brigade 39th Division. Later in October they moved to Whitley in Yorkshire, finally the battalion landed in France on 16th March 1916. After just under four months at the front Hayes was killed by a stray shot while on trench duty during the early stages of the Somme Battle on 8th July 1916, he is buried at Le Touret Military Cemetery, Grave Reference: III J 20
