Horace Hartshorrn enlisted in 1916, possibly as a conscript. During June 1917, the battalion spent much of its time quartered in the cavalry barracks, Ypres which was constantly shelled by the enemy. The battalion was deemed to have 'got off lightly' with 10 killed or dying of wounds and 53 wounded. Horace died of wounds and been buried nearby. At some point his grave was lost and his name was added to the Menin Gate Panel 39 and 41.
