George Coxon was born on 22nd January 1894 at Beeston, he was the son of James a tailor and Susannah Coxon née Gash and the brother of Peter, Isaac, Joseph Coxon and Anne Robinson (née Coxon). In 1911 they lived at 15, Willioughby Street and then 4 King Street and later Humber Road (all Beeston Nottingham). His father James was born in 1842 at Spondon, Derbyshire, his mother Susannah Gash was born in 1854 at Harrowby, Lincs, she died in 1908 aged 55 yrs, they were married on 13th November 1876 in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 15 Willoughby Street, Beeston, James 69 yrs is a widow, he is living with his children, Peter 23 yrs a joiner, Isaac 20 yrs a telephone worker, George 17 yrs a bricklayers apprentice and Joseph 13 yrs a shop boy. At the time of his death his father was living at 40 Lower Regent Street, Beeston, Nottingham.
Private George Coxon enlisted at Southall, Middlesex on 8th September 1914 giving his age as 20 yrs and 7 months, he was a telephone worker, he was residing with a Mr Kidd at 53 Florence Road, Southall, Middlesex. He was posted to the Middlesex Regiment and was first posted to Gibralter on 1st February 1915, he embarked from Gibralter on 22nd July 1915 landing in Marseilles, France on 24th July 1915 he was killed in action on 15th September 1916 as the battalion sustained heavy casualties on the Somme while moving forward to Leuze Wood and during the attack down south-east side of Bouleaux Wood at 1.40pm on 15/9/1916. having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
