In 1911 he was a club waiter at Nottingham County Court Bridlesmith Gate Nottingham and was working as a waiter in the Harrogate area upon enlistment.

Family history

Harold Betts Plowright was born in 1889 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Walter Plowright a publican and his first wife the late Elizabeth Plowright née Betts of Park Lane, Basford, Nottingham.

His father Walter was born in 1867 at Basford, he died in 1912 aged 45 yrs, his mother Elizabeth Betts was born in 1869 at Basford, she died in 1891 aged 22 yrs they were married on 5th July 1888 at St Leodegarius Church, Baford, they had a further child Arthur born 1890.

In 1901 the family lived on Noel Street Kimberley Nottinghamshire along with Walter's second wife Harriet Roe (born 1865 Old Normanton)

In the 1911 census his father is living at The Standard of England Public House, Park Lane, Basford, Walter 44 yrs is a publican, he is living with his second wife Harriett.

Harold married Margaret Annie Holmes (born 9th February 1890 ) on 17th June 1915 their marriage was recorded in the Knaresborough registration district, they lived at 7 Studley Road and later 6 Franklin Road (both Harrogate)

Commencing 23rd July 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military history

Bombadier Harold Betts Plowright enlisted at Harrogate on 12th December 1915, giving his age as 27 yrs and 4 months his address as 7 Studley Road, Harrogate he was a waiter, his next of kin was his wife Margaret Annie of the same address he was posted to the reserves.

Mobilised on 5th June 1916 he was posted as a gunner to the Royal Garrison Artillery, he died at Connaught Hospital Aldershot from pneumonia and emphysema on 16th January 1917 he was buried in Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery Section 6E Grave 2200

“PLOWRIGHT. – Died at Aldershot, of pneumonia, Gunner Harold Betts Plowright, waiter Hotel Majestic, Harrogate, late boots [sic] County Club, Nottingham. – Sorrowing grandma, aunties and uncles.”
