Roland Ernest Walls
He attended the Wesleyan School at Retford, and subsequently was a pupil at Thrumpton Council School, and then the Sir Frederick Milner School.
After leaving school he started working for George H. Willows, of Carolgate, Retford, and later was employed at the Retford branch of Freeman, Hardy and Willis.

Roland was the son of Arthur and Annie Walls and the brother of Laura Walls. In 1921, they lived at 49, Mainsforth Terrace, West Hartlepool. The family later moved to Clarborough.

He joined the Royal Air Force as a boy entrant and was stationed at an R.A.F. school until 18, and qualified as a wireless operator and gunner.
