He attended the Wesleyan School at Retford, and subsequently was a pupil at Thrumpton Council School, and then the Sir Frederick Milner School.

After leaving school he started working for George H. Willows, of Carolgate, Retford, and later was employed at the Retford branch of Freeman, Hardy and Willis.

Family history

Roland was the son of Arthur and Annie Walls and the brother of Laura Walls. In 1921, they lived at 49, Mainsforth Terrace, West Hartlepool. The family later moved to Clarborough.

Military history

He joined the Royal Air Force as a boy entrant and was stationed at an R.A.F. school until 18, and qualified as a wireless operator and gunner.

Stirling I N6001 took off 2257 29 June 1941 from Oakington. Shot down by a night-fighter (Oblt Helmut Lent 6. No survivors. Fatalities:

Squadron Leader W T C Seale, Sergeant R L Barrett (RAAF), Flight Sergeant B W Grocock, Flight Sergeant R E Walls, Sergeant L Whittle, Sergeant H D Archer, Sergeant M C Brown: killed; aircraft crashed at Stemmermuhlen, Germany.
