George Victor Smith
Educated at the Essex Boys'School, Dagenham, L/Cpl Smith joined the staff of British Ropes, Ltd. at Dagenham in 1933, and was afterwards transferred to the firm's works at Retford, where his father was employed as a ropery manage

He had three brothers, John, Leonard and Ronald and three sisters, Jessie, Voilet and Joan.
L/Corpl. Smith had just completed seven years with the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry.
He was called up for active service just before the outbreak of war, and proceeded to the Middle East in January, 1940. Just before Christmas, 1942, while attached to a tank unit, he was wounded. Later he rejoined his unit as a tank commander, and fell in action on April 6th 1943 during the opening stages of the battle of Wadi Akarit in Tunisia.
As 'A' Squadron prepared to go forward through the gap in the enemy defenses made by the preceding barrage, they were bombed by British bombers killing the twenty-four year old and wounding two others of his crew.

Those present included, Mrs. Smith (widow), Mr. and Mrs. J. Smith (parents), Mr. and Mrs. John Smith (brother and sister-in-law), Messrs. Frederick, Leonard and Ronald Smith (brothers), Mrs.
Jessie Sennie, Mrs. Violet Oldfield, and Miss Joan Smith (sisters). The service was conducted by the Rector Rev. R. Foskett.
