CASSINO MEMORIAL Panel 8.
In July 1943, the 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment served as glider-borne infantry spearheading Operation Ladbroke—the initial airborne assault of the Allied invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky). Operating under the 1st Airlanding Brigade of the 1st Airborne Division, the battalion suffered catastrophic casualties on the night of 9–10 July 1943, primarily due to high winds, poor navigation by towing aircraft, and anti-aircraft fire. Many gliders crashed into the sea and presumably Instone was aboard one of them.
