He was the son of James and Lily Cave and brother of Joyc Cave. In 1911, their address was 26, Union Road and in 1921 and 1939 they lived at 32, Triangle (both Ilkeston, Derbyshire). In 1937, James Cave and Gladys Laud were married and in 1939, they lived at 63, Newtons Lane, Cossall, Nottinghamshire. She later lived at Long Eaton, Derbyshire.

In January 1945, the 78th Battery of the 35th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, consisted of Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOWs) who had been captured following the fall of Singapore in 1942. By January 1945, the men were enduring captivity, performing forced labor, and facing extreme starvation, malaria, beriberi, and brutal physical treatment by their captors in Japanese camps in Borneo and the Pacific.
