He was the son of John William and Sarah Emily Johnson of Trowell, Nottinghamshire.
TROWELL (ST. HELEN) CHURCHYARD
In November 1942, the 70th (Young Soldiers) Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment functioned as a home-defence and continuation-training unit in the United Kingdom for 18- and 19-year-old volunteers before they reached standard conscription age.
Many of these young soldiers were progressively transferred to other operational corps, field regiments, or active service battalions around this period as the British Army reorganised its manpower.
Because he died while serving in the UK during a period where his battalion was not engaged in active overseas combat, his death was probably due to an illness, a training accident, or localized enemy air activity rather than frontline battlefield action.
His burial in his home parish churchyard indicates his family was able to bring his body home for a local funeral.
