Military history

Chasseur 8, Submarine Hunter was seized by the Royal Navy during Operation Grasp, and was handed over to the Free French on the 3rd July 1940.

On 13 July 1942, the Chasseur 8 Rennes, set sail from its base in Cowes (on the Isle of Wight) and went to escort the French submarine FNFL Rubis, which was returning from a minelaying mission off Arcachon. Attacked and sunk by German planes, killing 26 crew. Only British liaison officer Michael Wolton survived.
