Lancaster PA259 227 Sqn Take off RAF Balderton 23:39 (20/3/1945) on a mission to Bohlen to attack synthetic-oil plant, on the feint attack on Halle, intercepted and shot down by a night fighter possibly Hptm Johannes Hager NJG1. PA259 disintegrated and fell in the area of Eschwege. F/Lt King was not listed to be on the night's operation having done 7 ops in 11 days including 3 nights in a row; however another pilot asked him to fly instead. The crew took along a ‘second dickey’ (new pilot) F/O Pitts an old school friend of King’s.
