Military history

Lancaster RA546 227 Sqn Take off RAF Balderton to bomb the Wintershall Synthetic Oil Plant. Intercepted inbound at 21.20 and shot down by a Bf110 night fighter piloted by Maj Herbert Lutje NGJ6 crashing at Illesheim.

Parachuted out injured, dying 18/3/45. Badly burnt on hands, face and left side. On reaching the ground, he was taken prisoner by 2 civilians. Peter Hubner and Johann Kilian (possibly Hitlerjugend) badly beating the airman before he was taken to Illesheim airfield. Adujant Hptm Oscar Stumpf, Zerstörergeschwader 101 (ZG 101) placed F/Lt Hunt in a cell without medical treatment and he subsequently died of neglect at 10.30 18/3/1945.
