Berlin

316 Lancasters, 121 from 5 Group and 10 from 207 Sqdn attacked Berlinon this 3/9/1943 raid. The famous war broadcaster Wynford Vaughan – Thomas accompanied by his BBC sound engineer Reg Pidsley flew on this operation. Most of the bombing fell within Berlin’s city boundaries principally hitting residential districts such as Tiergarten, Wedding, Moabit and Chalottenberg and the industrial Siemensstadt. The bombers turned north for the homeward run which, according to Chris Ward, would deliberately violate Swedish air sace. 22 Lancasters (7% of the dispatched force) were lost including ED832 from Langar.

ED832 lost without trace. No survivors. Fatalities: IM Huntly-Wood (P), AF McKenna (FE Station Commander), TJD Waterman (N), JL Young (W/Op), FGC Spanner (AB), KJ Knight (AG), AJC Whitehead (AG). There were 4 DFCs and 1 DFM amongst this very experienced crew.
