Denmark LEMVIG CEMETERY Grave 699.

Mining between Denmark and Sweden

Lancaster I W4945 took off 2055 28 April 1943 from Langar. Shot down by Marine Flak and crashed 0129 29 April 1943 9 km SW of Struer Denmark. No survivors. Fatalities: KR Rees (P), G bTyler (FE), PAK Mockford (N), L Foulds (W/Op), TE Ellingham (AB), AW Cochrane (AG), SW Cowham (AG)

207 Lancasters, five from Langar, took part in this operation. W4945 mined between Malmo and Copenhagen and were homebound over North Jutland close to the North Sea when shot down. They were one of 22 aircraft failing to return, the largest ever loss in a mining operation suffered by Bomber Command. However, as Chris Ward put it ‘the number of mines delivered, 593, was also a record for one night, and would not be surpassed.’ (Ward with Raymond Glynne-Owen, 207 Squadron p. 173)
