Duisburg

A mixed force of 379 Lancasters, Halifaxes and Stirlings attacked Duisburg 8th/9th April 1943. Poor weather made accurate target marking difficult. The raid was not particularly successful with only 50 houses destroyed.

Lancaster I ED 554 took off 2026 9 April 1943 from Langar. Shot down at 22.42 near Wormerveer north of Amsterdam, eight miles south of the Dutch coast by a night-fighter flown by Ofw Heinz Winke 1V./NJG1. No survivors. Fatalities: HA Healey (P), WL Whitehouse (FE), AR Lewis (N), R Bishop (W/Op), DE Whitaker (BA), REA Dampier (AG), CW Kleynhans (AG)
