Nuremberg

Lancaster I ED356 took off 1950 25 Feb 1943 from Langar. Crashed at Ludwigshafen. No survivors. Fatalities: Murrray Kerr Sexton (P), William Alexander Stevenson Elder (2nd P), Kenneth Roy Johnson (FE), George Howard Wheeler (N), John Stanley Fayle (W/Op), Kenneth Herbert Hogarth (B), Percy Gordon Williams (AG), Robert Stanley Hannah (AG).

337 aircraft – 169 Lancasters, 104 Halifaxes, 64 Stirlngs. 9 aircraft lost – 2.7% of the attacking force. Weather conditions were poor and the Pathfinders arrived late. Some bombs fell on the northern edge of Nuremberg and on the nearby town of Furth and in countryside to the north. However, 300 buildings in the city were damaged including a historic military chapel which was burnt out. 12 civilians, a soldier on leave and a POW were killed in Nuremberg and 26 lost their lives at Furth.
