Vera (née Crooks) Clowes was the daughter of Fredrick R and Hetty Crooks and the sister of Nora A and Raymond Crooks. In 1939, they lived at 100, Little Hallam Lane, Ilkeston. Vera Crooks and Charles R Clowes were married at Ilkeston during the Spring of 1943 and it is understood they were honeymooning at Torquay when Vera was killed during an air raid.

Vera Clowes was a wireless operator at RAF Langar on honeymoon leave at Torquay.
On 30 May 1943, a devastating German "tip-and-run" air raid on Torquay, Devon, resulted in 45 deaths in the St Marychurch and Hele areas, marking the town's deadliest day of WWII. The attack, which involved 21 planes targeted Sunday school children, with 21 children among the casualties.
