He was the son of Joseph and Sarah Pulford and the brother of George Henry Pulford of 5, Lyncroft, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.

In January 1944, the 2nd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment was engaged in intense combat at the Garigliano River crossing in Italy as part of the opening phase of the First Battle of Monte Cassino. Serving under the 17th Infantry Brigade within the British 5th Infantry Division (part of X Corps), the battalion played a vital role in breaching the German Gustav Line.
Operational Timeline: January 1944The Assault (17 January): The 17th Infantry Brigade launched a night assault at 21:00 hours to cross the swift-flowing Garigliano River. The 2nd Northamptonshire Regiment pressed forward on the coastal sector along Route 7.Breaking the Gustav Line: The assault succeeded in establishing a bridgehead, forcing a breakthrough against the German 94th Infantry Division.
The Battle of Minturno: Following the crossing, the battalion fought fiercely through the rest of January to clear and secure the heavily fortified Minturno Ridge and nearby high ground.Heavy Casualties: The unit sustained significant losses from German counter-attacks and relentless artillery fire. Many of those who fell, such as Albert Edward Pulford (died 30 January), are laid to rest at the Minturno War Cemetery. Others with no known grave are commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
