He was the son of Augustus and Sarah Jane Bates. Arthur Bates and Louie Reeve were married during the winter of 1940. They had a son named Malcolm. Louie Bates lived at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.

In September 1943, the 52nd (East Lancashire) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery landed at Salerno in Italy to take part in the Italian Campaign. Lt. Col. P. R. Dayrell-Browning was in command of the unit during this period, having taken over in July 1943.Campaign Context and MovementsThe Landings: The regiment came ashore at Salerno shortly after the initial Allied invasion in early September 1943.
Bates landed with the regiment at Salerno, Italy, in early September 1943. He was killed less than two weeks after the initial Allied landings, a period when the bridgehead faced violent German counter-attacks.
