Family history

Albert Devenport (Davenport) was born in 1892 at Mansfield, was the son of Herbert Devenpor a tarmac labourer, and Maria Davenport née Lee of 210 New Victoria Street, Mansfield.

His father Herbert was born in 1861 , his mother Maria Lee was born in 1857 both were born in Mansfield they were married on 9th September 1883 at St Jon’s Church, Mansfield, they went on to have 9 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 16 Union Street, Mansfield, Herbert 50 yrs is a labourer tarmacker, he is living with his wife Maria 53 yrs and their children, Herbert 27 yrs a coal miner hewer, Walter 17 yrs a coal miner hewer, Ernest 15 yrs an iron moulder and Lilley 11 yrs of age.

Albert married Annie Moore (born 22nd June 1892) in 1911 at Mansfield, they lived at Spout Lane, Arnold, Nottingham, they had children, Elsie born 29th May 1911, Ernest, born 13th December 1913 and Albert born 7th January 1915, and Evelyn born and died in 1916.

In the 1911 census he is living at 4 Cooks Avenue, Mansfield Woodhouse with his wife Annie, they are living with his brother in law Percy Watson 28 yrs a coal miner, hewer and his family, he is shown as being 18 yrs of age and a coal miner hewer, his wife Annie is also 18 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Albert Devenport enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 29th May 1918 and is buried at Marfaux British Cemetery, France.
