Stirling I R9272 took off to bomb Mulheim 2340 21 June 1943 from Oakington. Shot down by a night-fighter (Hptm Walter Millius NJG3) crashing at Gilze (Noord Brabant) 9 km WSW from the centre of Tilburg Holland.

5 fatalities: JS Watt (P), DS Donalson (FE), FAG Tomkins (N), AJ Sutton (BA), FJB Dukes (MUG),

JH Ross (W/Op) & M Pemberton Ellis (RG) sturvived to become POWs.

557 aircraft - 242 Lancasters, 155 Halifaxes, 93 Stirlings, 55 Wellingtons and 12 Mosquitoes took part in this raid. 35 were lost (6.3% of the force). Mulheim and Oberhausen were extensively damaged with 578 people killed and 1,174 injured. 1,135 houses were destroyed and 12,637 damaged. 41 public buildings were hit + 27 schools, 17 churches and 6 hospitals. Some damage to industrial infrastructure also resulted. The post-war British Bombing Survey estimated that 64% of Mulheim was destroyed during this raid.
