Military history

The 401st Glider Infantry Regiment was part of the 101st Airborne Division, but to even up the divisions the 2nd Bn 401st GIR was attached to the 82nd Airborne Division giving both divisions 3 battalions. 10/3/1944 the 2nd Bn 401st GIR only existed on paper but were the 3 Bn, 325 GIR, 82nd Airborne Division moving to Camp March Hare at Scraptoft, Leicestershire. 20/4/1944 the GIR left their camp to head to RAF Balderton for a glider assault training exercise at Rearsby airfield, Leicestershire. RAF Balderton USAAF C-47 transports towed the Horsa gliders to the landing ground. The wind had started to pick up in the wrong direction from that detailed for the landing by the time the formation had arrived. But due to the large scale of the exercise it was not aborted. With the high winds gliders began landing and over shooting the landing ground or colliding into each other after landing. On exiting his glider 1st Lieutenant Lieberman failed to notice a landing glider and dispite the pilots efforts to lift the wing, he was struck by a strut and decapitated. Buried Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridgeshire, England.
