MINTURNO WAR CEMETERY II, E, 12. Italy
After fighting in north Africa and the Tunisia campaign, in December 1943, 5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (previously the 2/5th Battalion) was actively fighting in Italy as part of the 139th Infantry Brigade, 46th Division, participating in winter river crossings and mountainous operations following the Salerno landings.
Having pushed through earlier engagements like Salerno and the Volturno River crossing earlier in the autumn, the battalion was involved in the grueling advance toward the Winter Line, including preparations and early actions surrounding the Garigliano River crossings in December 1943 and into January 1944.
