Extra information

George Alfred Ballard's great nephew, John B Hawksley- Blackburn, notes

'Both (Abraham and Alice Ballard) had been children inmates at the Bagthorpe Workhouse, now the Nottingham City Hospital. Abraham eventually worked within the administration being in the employ of Nottingham Council. Their first 3 children were born in Nottingham then he and family moved to London and 3 more children born one being GEORGE ALBERT BALLARD 1875 at Poplar. They later returned to Nottingham and had 3 more children. Abraham was re-employed at Bagthorpe.

GEORGE ALBERT BALLARD married Mary Ann Mason in 1906 at Nottingham. On the 1911 census his wife Mary Ann Ballard and her 3 children Ethel Lois 4, George 3 Herbert 1 were inmates at Bagthorpe.

I was particularly interested in Ethel Lois at the time because she was my Aunt because of her marriage to my Paternal Granduncle Frank Moody from Bothamsall Village. They married in Nottingham 1936 and lived 70 Lindfield Road, Broxtowe.

By the 1921 census Mary Ann and her 3 children were out of the Workhouse and living near Ilkeston Road and she had a job. She did marry again to Tom Bird in 1921
Ethel was a canteen worker for the Education Board and Frank worked for Nottingham City Council.

I remember Aunt Ethel being a kind quiet gentle and sad lady. Her childhood must have been tough.'
