William Henry West known as 'Harry' was born in 1886 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Charles West a hosiery trimmer and Jane West née Griffin,of 13 Washington Street, Nottingham.
His father Charles was born in 1866 at Nottingham, he died in 1907 aged 41 yrs, his mother Jane Griffin was born in 1867 at Nottingham, they were married on 11th November 1883 at St Marks Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Washington Street, Nottingham, Jane West 43 yrs a widow a lace worker is living with her children, James West 18 yrs a printer, Arthur 16 yrs a hawker, Joseph 14 yrs a scholar, Thomas 12 yrs a scholar , Jane 10 yrs and Nellie 8 yrs of age.
.William Henry West was married twice, his first wife was Nora Kenrick Booth was born in 1884 they were married on 1st March 1903 at Nottingham, they had 3 children, Florence May born 4th May 1903, Jane born 7th July 1904 and John Henry born 12th October 1906, Nora died in 1908 she was aged 24 yrs.
He went on to marry his second wife Mabel Sabin (born 30th July 1889) on 8th March 1915 at Nottingham, Mabel brought a child to the marriage Ethel Sabin born 1st December 1910 they had a child born before wedlock, William Henry born 19th March 1913 and they had a son Thomas born 21st April 1915.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 6 Meynall Street, Nottingham, William Henry now calling himself Harry is 25 yrs of age and is a hawker, he is living with his wife Mabel 22 yrs a lace hand, and their children, May 8 yrs of age, Jane 6 yrs of age, John 4 yrs of age and Ethel 4 months old.
Commencing 31st December 1917 his widow Mabel was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week at this time she was living at 20 Washington Street, Nottingham.
Private 43218 William Henry West enlisted at Nottingham, initially serving with the service number 24973 Sherwood Foresters Regiment he transferred to the 8th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 23rd April 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. Bay 6
His brother Private Joseph West enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 10th August 1915 aged 23 yrs, he is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 1. Row C. Grave 1.
