Rifleman Frank Coombes (Service Number 14299431) served in the 1st Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles, which was an Airborne unit (part of the 6th Airborne Division) rather than the 1st Battalion of the London Irish Rifles. Because both battalions shared the overarching "Royal Ulster Rifles" regimental parentage, they are often listed together in general casualty databases.
While the 1st Battalion, London Irish Rifles was fighting in Northern Italy during April 1945, the 1st Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles was heavily engaged in northwestern Europe.
Following their famous glider landings during Operation Varsity (the Rhine Crossing) in late March 1945, the 1st Airborne Battalion advanced rapidly across Germany toward the Baltic coast. Rifleman Coombes was killed during the final weeks of the war in Europe as the Allies pushed deep into Germany.
