NOTTINGHAM NORTHERN CEMETERY Sec. D/17. Grave 25.
HMS Lark
HMS Lark was a modified Black Swan class sloop launched 28th August 1943. At 10.15 hours on 17 Feb 1945, U-968 fired one LUT torpedo at a warship reported as a Soviet destroyer of the Groznyj class and observed a hit after 6 minutes 20 seconds. HMS Lark (Commander Hedworth Lambton, RN, (retired)) was hit in the stern northeast of Murmansk, towed into the Kola Inlet and beached near Rosta. The ship was declared a total loss by the Royal Navy and the wreck handed over to the Soviets. Three men were lost but Able Seaman Frank Barnsdall from Nottingham died in the UK two weeks later so it is presumed he was invalided home before the sinking. (uboat.net & naval-history.net)
