In August 1944, the 153rd Regiment Royal Armoured Corps (8th Battalion, The Essex Regiment) experienced a brief, intense period of front-line combat in Normandy before being abruptly disbanded due to severe British Army manpower shortages.
As part of the 34th Army Tank Brigade, they operated Churchill infantry tanks—retaining their original infantry Essex Regiment cap badges on the black berets of the Royal Armoured Corps
Towlson's death occurred during the Orne Crossing and the subsequent pursuit towards the Falaise Pocket. On 9 August, the 153rd RAC supporting the 59th (Staffordshire) Infantry Division successfully bridged and crossed the River Orne. Between August 10 and 15, the regiment was heavily engaged in clearing pockets of German resistance and aggressively pushing forward, often carrying infantry troops directly on top of their Churchill tanks. Trooper Towlson was killed during these intense, fluid breakout battles just five days before the regiment received its sudden disbandment orders.
