He was the son of Mabel Cumberworth and the brother of Edna and Jarvis Cumberworth of 96, Winchester Street, Sherwood, Nottingham. Leslie Cumberworth and Doreen Stanley were married in Surrey early in 1944.

Halifax LL362 took off from Blyton at 10. 20 but was soon in trouble, the pilot remarking that his aierlons 'had gone'. The port outer engine began to overheat after which it became impossible to maintain height. Thus at 10.45 the bomber went through the tops of some trees and crashed at Swanland 6 miles WSW of Hull.
