Family history

Son of Tom and Milly Draycott of 5 Fourth Avenue, Rainworth.
He had a brother, John born on 14th July 1977.
In 1921 the family were living at Bamford Street, Newton and Tom was working at Blackwell Colliery.

Arthur enlisted on 15th September 1939. The 1st battalion had been based in India but in February 1941 they were moved to Penang and from there they moved to Sungei Patani on mainland Malaya.
On the night 10th/11th Deceber 1941 they had their first contact with the Japanese. By the 20th December they had suffered such heavy casualties that they were amalgamated with the 2nd bn of The East Surrey Regiment. They fought at Jitra, Kamper, Batar-Pa-Hat and Gurun Road.
