HMS Eagle

HMS Eagle was an early Royal Navy aircraft carrier converted from a battleship previously owned by Chile. Eagle spent the first nine months of World War Two in the Indian Ocean searching for German commerce raiders. She was transferred to the Mediterranean in May 1940 where she escorted convoys to Malta and Greece and attacked Italian shipping, naval units and bases in the eastern Mediterranean. Eagle also participated in the Battle of Calabria in July.

On May 25th 1941, Eagle along with HMS Nelson refuelled at Freetown Sierra Leone before Eagle departed four days later to hunt for German supply ships in the South Atlantic. It is presumed that Charles Valentine Williams along with Able Seaman Arthur Shooter from Sutton in Ashfield, buried at Sierra Leone, died as a result of illness or wounds resulting from this period of South Atlantic service.
