Bish was the wireless operator aboard Lancaster III ED 972 was part of a 660 aircraft attack on Monchengladbach and Rheydt. The bombing was very concentrated and both towns were extensively damaged In Monchengladbach, 1,059 buildings were destroyed - 171 industrial, 19 military and 869 domestic. 117 people were killed. 1,280 buildings were damaged at Rheydt with 253 people killed. Across both towns, 2,152 people were injured with 12 missing.

50 planes (3.8% of the attacking force) were shot down including Lancaster III ED 972. There were no survivors. Fatalities: Bish + Arnold Booth, Seymour Villiers Brown, Norman Roscoe Frazer, Joseph Henry Short, Mervyn Stacey, John Cordon Towle and Ralph Wildbore.
