Family history

Son of William Smith Bayley and Constance Bayley; husband of Jane Bayley, of Farndon, Nottinghamshire. Jane and sons George Thomas b.1928 & Philip Arthur b.1930 evacuated to Perth WA. Returned to the UK on RMS Rangitata 1946 to Farndon.

Military history

Selangor Local Defence Corps was organised as a Home Guard from October 1940. A full time Commissioner with Deputy Commissioners, were appointed in Malaya in September 1940. The Corps was composed of European British over 41 years of age; also British subjects or citizens under British Protection aged 18-55 years, and was opened to British- linked non-Europeans from 31 March 1941. The Local Defence Corps were also available to support the State Volunteer Forces. Transferred to the Singapore Observer Corps 24/1/42, captured at the fall of Malaya, held as a civilian at Changi and Sime Road Internee Camps. Died during repatriation to India 12/9/45. Buried at sea.
