He was the son of Joseph John and Mary Elizabeth Armitage and the brother of Phyllis Freda Armitage. In 1921, they lived at 'Claremont', 8, Waverley Street, Nottingham. His father was the chairman of Armitage Brothers Ltd. Grocers. By 1939, the family had re-located to 34, Wilford Lane, West Bridgford, Nottingham.

Armitage lost his life flying Spitfire IIa P7569. He was shot down mid-afternoon by an Me 109 during a 'Roadstead' (low level attack on coastal shipping).
