Military history
1/2 June 1942 Hampden AT191 408 Squadron RAF Balderton on the 2nd 1,000- bomber raid to Essen. Believed shot down by Lt Karl Heinz Vollkopf 4/NJG2 and crashed into the Ijsselmeer at 00:06 with the loss of all crew. AT191 crashed some distance from the interception by Vollkopf, at least 20 minutes flying time so this claim maybe in doubt. The Hampden was recovered during draining of the Polders area of the Ijsselmeer in 1961. All crew buried at Amersfoort (Oud Leusden) General Cemetery.
