Military history

15/16 May 1942 Hampden AT224 408 Sqn RAF Balderton take off 22:19 on a gardening mission to ‘Pumpkin’, mine-laying area in the northern part of the Great Belt. Shot down by a German mine-sweeper 190J which laid anchored 2 miles west of Vesborg lighthouse at 01:53, exploded in the air and crashed into the sea off the coast of Jutland with the loss of all four crew.

F/Sgt Raymond Dillon RCAF - Found in the sea south west of Koldby Kaas, Samsø by the German Wehrmacht, laid to rest in Værløse cemetery near Copenhagen on 19th May. US Citizen
Sgt William Palmer - Found drifted ashore near Koldby Kaas on the island of Samsø and was taken to Tranebjerg hospital. On 15 June he was laid to rest with full military honours in Tranebjerg cemetery, the German Field Priest Johannes Vorrath officiating at the graveside ceremony.
