4976196 L/Cpl Harold Hopewell, Sherwood Foresters, died on 17 June 1940 during the evacuation of Dunkirk when HMT Lancastria (previously SS Lancastria), which was loaded well above capacity, was bombed and sank within 20 minutes. It is now estimated that between 4.000 and 7,000 died; the largest loss of life in a single ship sinking in British maritime history.
