Military history

The 1st Inniskillings moved to the Hill Station of Wellington, Nilgiris District in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, where they were located at the outbreak of World War II. When Japan entered the war, the Inniskillings formed part of the weak and ill-equipped force committed to defend Burma. Airlifted from Dum Dum, Eastern India to Magway, Burma 14/3/1942 to join the 13th Indian Brigade.

Fusilier Ainsworth died during the fighting around Yenangyaung, whilst the battalion was part of the 1st Burma Division including the Chinese 38th Division, Chinese Expeditionary Force.
