26 March 1942 Hampden AE139 408 Sqn. Took off from RAF Stoke Orchard at 16.00 to return to RAF Balderton after a Nickel sortie to Rennes the previous day. The engines failed after running out of fuel due to a faulty gauge. While attempting to land at RAF Abingdon AE139 hit high trees to the East of the cricket pitch, slid across the ground. Before flipping onto its back and coming to rest against the wall of a church.
