Military history

Killed serving as a gunner on the SS Empire Sun a Sea Hurricane aircraft catapult armed merchant cargo ship which was built by Short Brothers Ltd, Sunderland. Launched on 10
April 1941 and completed in June 1941. Torpedoed on 7 February 1942 and sunk by U-751 south of Halifax, Nova Scotia with the loss of 11 crewmembers. No CAM aircraft were provided during January and February 1942 after it proved impossible to maintain the catapult-mounted aircraft in flying order during the North Atlantic winter. Royal Navy personnel on merchant ships were listed under their pay service bases.

Extra information

U-751 sank 6 ships between June 41 and May 42. After serving six operational patrols, U-751 was attacked on her seventh patrol, four days into her voyage on July 17. She was sunk, with all 48 hands, off the coast of Cape Ortegal, Spain by depth charges from a Lancaster of 61 Sqn on lone to Costal Command and a Whitley of 502 Sqn, both out of RAF St Eval.
