Edward Fletcher was born George Edward Fletcher in 1891 at Mansfield, he was the son of John Edward an oil van man and Jane Fletcher née Thrall of 2 Pickard's Yard, Stockwell Gate, Mansfield.
His father John Edward was born in 1868 at Opworth, Staffordshire, his mother Mary Jane Thrall was born in 1868 at Dublin, they were married in 1886 at Mansfield, they had 6 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 40 Harrington Street, Mansfield, John Edward Fletcher 43 yrs is an oil van man, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 43 yrs and their children, Eliza Ann 21 yrs a laundress, George Edward 20 yrs a shoe hand, Mary Kate 15 yrs a winding hand in a cotton factory and Margaret Elsie 6 yrs of age.
George Edward married Minniev Wright,(born 22nd January 1891 ) in 1914 at Mansfield they lived at 142 Victoria Street, Mansfield, they had a son Ronald Edward born 6th April 1915,.
Commencing 18th June 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week
Private George Edward Fletcher enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 6th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, Admitted to hospital several times. 20/05/1916: myalgia, 27/05-03/06/1916: myalgia, 11/06-17/06/1916: injured arm, 17/07-27/08/1916: shell shock, 20/09-03/10/1916: shell shock. He was killed in action on 1st Decembe 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
His brother, John William was killed on 09/08/1915 whilst serving with the York & Lancaster Regiment.
