Son of Edgar and Olive Beatrice Nichollsof 25 Hillmoor Street, Mansfield.
Siblings: Derrick (1924), Joan (1916) and Robert (1929).
He married Vera Nixon of 39 Southwell Road in late 1941.
The 6th battalion was form in October 1941 and was deployed to the Middle East in June 1942. They were a motorised infantry unit and once covered 2000 miles in 3 weeks.
They joined the 201 Guards Brigade in Syria in September 1942 and saw action in the latter stages of the Tunisia Campaign.
Their first combat came on the night of the 16th March 1943 when they took part in the Battle for the Mareth Line (16/3 to 31/3/1943). The Mareth Line was 62 miles of barbed wire, with 100,000 anti-tank mines, 70,000 anti-personnel mines, along with concrete artillery bunkers. The Axis forces had retereated here after El Alamein and this was to be Rommel's last action in Africa before he was recalled to Europe.
Arthur was one of 7 members of his battalion that died on the 17th March.
