They took part in Operation Shingle, an attempt to bypass the German forces by making an amphibious landing at Salerno to take Rome. Despite the element of surprise the Allied forces became trapped in the marshlands surrounding the beach-head, especially so when the Germans flooded the marshlands by switching off the drainage pumps. The Battle of Anzio and the taking of Rome last to 5th of June 1944 and cost the lives of 10,000 British soldiers and 24,000 American lives.
