Military history

15/16 November 1941 Hampden P1152 50 Sqn. Take off 20.32 RAF Swinderby on mining operation 'Nectarine' area off the Frisian Islands. Heavy cloud obscured the target zone and P1152 returned early. Due to heavy icing the aircraft flew at 1500ft and crossed the coast too far North near the River Tees.

Lost in cloud, P1152 descended to locate their position and at 02.00 hit high ground
between Baysdale and Stoney Ridge, Westdale Moor, Yorkshire.

2 crew managed to make their way to Hawthorn House to await rescue.
