Military history

16 August 1941 Hampden X2959 25 OTU. Night circuit training from RAF Balderton strayed off course and hit trees before crashing into 3 houses on, London Road, Balderton and catching fire.

Mrs Lucy Brumpton was in her bedroom at the front of the house at the time with her youngest child, Roy, and they managed to survive the crash by jumping out of a window. The other children in the bedrooms at the back were killed. William their father was working nights at the shutting yard, Northgate station and arrived in the morning to find his house destroyed and 6 of his 7 children dead.
