Family history

Only child of Thomas and matilda Howorth of 14 Cromwell Street, Mnasfield.
Alfred was baptised at St Peter's Church on 31st October 1915.
The family were living at 14 Cromwell st when Alfred was born and where at the same address in 1939.

Military history

S.S. Saganaga: A steam merchant ship. On the morning of the 5th September 1942 four fully loaded ships were waiting in Bell Island Tickle, Conception Bay, New Foundland whilst 2 more ships were being loaded with iron ore. At 11:46 hrs an explosion on the Saganaga which blew 2 sailors, decking and iron ore into the air. A few momnets later a second torpedo struck the ship, cutting her in two and she sank in 30 seconds. The crew had no warning and many men drowned inside the ship. Out of a crew of 40, 29 died. Later one of the other ships, the Lord Strathcona was hit by the conning tower of the U-Boat (U-513) and then by a torpedo and sank within 90 seconds, but the crew had already abandoned ship and they all survived.
