He was the son of Thomas and Emily Morgan and brother of Mary Morgan. In 1939, they lived at 55, Cator Lane, Beeston, Nottingham. John and Emily later lived at Chilwell, Nottinghamshire.

Morgan was killed aboard Maryland [UNK] UA420720 in circumstances which remain unclear. 203 Squadron had for some weeks been deployed in the eastern Mediterranean carrying out offensive sweeps against enemy shipping and submarines. On July 20th 1942, according to their ORB, 'Flight Sgt Moorhouse, Sgt Morgan, Sgt Martin and Sgt Murphy had set off at 16.57 hrs from Gianaclis (Alexandria area) to carry out a reconnaissance of the Sidi Barrani (Egypt) area but failed to return.' The following day (21/7/42) at 11.03 'Sgt Evans in Blenheim 'M' set off from LG 226 to search for our Maryland missing yesterday. An intensive search was carried out in the Arab's Gulf area with nil result.'

The Martin 167 Maryland was a highly capable American-designed light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft produced by the Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore, Maryland, during World War II. Despite not being adopted by the US military, it saw extensive service with French and British forces, notably in the Battle of France and Mediterranean campaigns.
