Trained to be a doctor at Edinburgh University from 11th October 1927 to 20th July 1932.
Qualified has a M.B (Bachelor of Medicine) and CH. B (Bachelor of Surgery from the latin Baccalaureus Chirurgiae).
He had attended George Watson's College from 1918 to 1927 and from 1927 he was at the University of Edinburgh.
He practised in Edinburgh before moving th Forest Town towards the end of the 1930's.
He also a lecturer in First Aid for the ARP service at the start of the war

Military history

He was a Temporary Surgeon Lieutenant, which was the rank given to surgeons in the Royal Navy. His date of seniority was 1st April 1940,
HMS Toward: A steam merchant vessel on convoy escort duties.
Just off Cape Farewell, Greenland she was attacked by a U-Boat. At 03:47 hours on the 7th February 1943 she was hit by a torpedo fired from U-402. She began to list at 10 -15 degrees and was rolling in heavy waters. As she was sinking fast the order to abandon ship was given and despite the lifeboats being lowered several men jumped into the icy waters. She sank within 15 minutes of being hit by the torpedo. Out of a crew of 67 men 43 were lost.
