Son of Herbert and Annie Gertrude Gelsthorpe of 3 Cliff Street, Mansfield. Gertrude, as she was known, had been married before marrying Herbert in 1910. He first husband, Austin Sanders, died in 1908 and she had had 2 sons by him, Austin in 1905 and Sydney in 1907.
Herbert and Gertrude had 4 children, Kathleen in 1910, Herbert in 1913, Winifred in 1919 and Kenneth in 1922.
Herbert was baptised at St Peter's Church Mansfield on 25th February 1913.
Herbert jnr married Hilda Hollingworth in 1938 they had no children and they lived at 30 Beckett Avenue Mansfield. He left her £469 16s & 3d in his will.
